Stanko Ranch

About the Ranch

In 1907, Peter and Anna Stanko sold their saloon in Walsenburg and moved to Steamboat Springs. They purchased land from Logan Crawford, the son of Steamboat Springs founder James Crawford. The Stankos raised cattle, pigs, oats, and barley, invested in a steam-powered thrashing machine to help with the haying, and helped create a farm co-operative build a grain elevator. In 1939, the Stankos retired. The ranch continues to be prosperous and received status of a Colorado Centennial Farm in 2007 and won the Aldo Leopold Conservation Award in 2010. The Stanko Ranch is a Centennial Ranch (2007). Images donated by Jim Stanko to the Tread of Pioneers Museum can be found in their digital collections. Jim Stanko also co-authored The Historical Guide to Routt County (1979). An article was published about the Stanko Ranch and is available at the Steamboat Pilot.
